Just Can't Get Enough of Mrs. Bennet

Welcome Back!

Last week's post with Mrs. Bennet was so much fun, I decided to add more from that scene. This comes from my WIP Betrothed to Mr. Darcy. You can find last week's snippet here.

From an upstairs window at Longbourn, Mrs. Bennet, Kitty and Mary are continuing to observe the arrival of the Darcys and Colonel Fitzwilliam. Mrs. Bennet and Kitty are particularly interested in Colonel Fitzwilliam.

“Mama, he looked right at me,” Kitty exclaimed.

“Of course he did. Now let me look at you before you go and meet him.” Mrs. Bennet  tugged a bit here and pushed a bit there to magically create a bosom where little had been before.

Mary observed the process and said, “Illusions of beauty are quickly shattered. True beauty lies in the virtuous soul of a young lady.”

“Oh shut up!” Kitty and Mrs. Bennet chorused.

    1. Thank you! Mrs. Bennet was stuffing bras before they were even invented. Clearly a woman before her time.

    1. Thank you. They are all such different personalities that it is fun to imagine them interacting.

  3. This is one awesome dialog. Mary is so righteous, I wonder if she is not adopted or something.

    1. Hahaha. What a funny idea. I bet Mrs. Bennet wonders that herself sometimes.

    2. Mary tried so hard. "The only plain sister in a family of beauties" had to make up the deficit somewhere. I feel sorry for her really.

    3. Kate--you are quite the Janeite. I do feel badly for Mary. Stay tuned...she's going to get her own story soon.

    4. Awesome! Very much looking forward to it, Violet!

    5. Now that I've said it, I'll have to write it. Yikes! Once I finish Betrothed to Mr. Darcy I am going to write a series of short stories that will be combined in one book (no title yet) where each of the single women at Darcy and Lizzy's wedding take home a piece of wedding cake and dream about the man they will marry. So that will include Mary and Kitty Bennet, Georgiana Darcy and Caroline Bingley. Plus, I think I'll work Anne de Bourgh into the mix as well. It's fun to think about the possibilities.

  4. Love this snippet. Give that girl some boobs, somehow. And Mary, such a goody two shoes, I wanted to smack her, too! LOL!

  5. This is beautifully written!

You have Mrs. Bennett and Kitty down--which means I want to shake them both for being so superficial. Though I suppose they're a product of their times.

And Mary is often right (have you noticed?) but she's so prim about it . . . :D

  6. hahaha I love it. You've captured the camaraderie and love between them wonderfully while showcasing the nerve wracking process of primping. Wonderful snippet.

    1. Thank you. Great point about the love and camaraderie. I think the Bennet household was chaotic, but still filled with fun and love.

    1. Thank you! Even though they are minor characters, JA did a great job of defining each of them.

  10. LOL! Great characterizations of all three. But I doubt the good Colonel will pay serious court to any of the Bennet girls. He needs to marry for money if he is to maintain his accustomed lifestyle.

    1. Spoken like a true Janeite! Yes, if The Colonel was going to go after any of the Bennet girls he would have pursued Lizzy when he met her, though he might have seen the way his cousin looked at her. One of the many mysteries of P and P.

  11. Poor Mary, always saying the wrong thing at the wrong time (even if she IS right). You captured the moment so well - excellent excerpt!

  13. LOL Poor Mary. I confess to never having read the original Pride and Prejudice, so these characters are all new to me - but you're making me want to see if I can get it on my Kindle.

    1. Thank you. Not all of the book is as nutty as this bit, but there is quite a bit of humor. I can't seem to not add something funny when it strikes me.
